Lufthansa Activates Starlink on First A320neo
Lufthansa has launched its new high-speed onboard internet service powered by Starlink.
The first equipped aircraft, an Airbus A320neo registered as D-AINM, entered service on August 19, 2026. The inaugural flight traveled from Frankfurt to Rome.
Flight LH234 departed Frankfurt at 12:15 p.m. During the flight, Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines, activated the new system at an altitude of 10,000 meters.
Passengers can now access high-speed internet throughout the flight. In many cases, the connection can match or exceed speeds available at home or in the office.
More Lufthansa Aircraft to Receive Starlink
Lufthansa plans to install the technology on up to 10 additional A320-family aircraft before the end of 2026.
The rollout will cover aircraft operated by both Lufthansa and Lufthansa City Airlines. Lufthansa Technik will carry out most of the installations at its Berlin facility.
The airline plans to combine the installations with scheduled technical checks. This approach can help limit additional aircraft downtime.
Other Lufthansa Group airlines will also receive the technology as the wider rollout continues.
Lufthansa Plans Fleet-Wide Connectivity
Lufthansa Group plans to equip aircraft across its entire airline portfolio with Starlink.
The group expects around 850 aircraft to feature the technology by 2029. This rollout would make Lufthansa Group the largest airline group in Europe to offer Starlink high-speed internet across its fleet.
The investment forms part of Lufthansa Group’s broader modernization programme. The group is also investing in new aircraft and improvements to products and services throughout the passenger journey.
Free Wi-Fi for Eligible Passengers
The new Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi service will allow passengers to browse the internet during their flights.
The onboard portal will also provide destination information and access to Lufthansa Group content. Passengers can browse a selection of eJournals through the platform.
The airline plans to add more flight-related information and services in the future.
Importantly, Lufthansa will provide the service free of charge to Miles & More members and Travel ID users. The benefit applies regardless of travel class.
Mastercard Supports Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi
Mastercard sponsors the Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi service. The company also supported Lufthansa’s previous FlyNet service as a partner.
The new platform includes terms of use that apply to all passengers.
Starlink Marks New Connectivity Milestone
Lufthansa says the Starlink rollout represents another step in the airline’s modernization programme.
The technology will provide connectivity from takeoff to landing. It will also support internet access across a range of routes, including short-haul and long-haul services.
Jens Ritter said Lufthansa wants to combine new aircraft, improved services and innovative technology to enhance the passenger experience.
With hundreds of aircraft scheduled for installation over the coming years, Lufthansa Group aims to make high-speed onboard connectivity a standard part of its travel experience.
