American Airlines and Infinium Complete Commercial Passenger Flight Using eSAF

American Airlines and Infinium have announced the first delivery of electro sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) to a U.S. commercial airport for use on a passenger flight.

The milestone flight operated from Corpus Christi International Airport (CRP) to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). It demonstrates how next-generation, low-carbon aviation fuel can work with existing aircraft and airport infrastructure.

eSAF produced from waste CO₂

Infinium produced the eSAF at its Project Pathfinder facility in Corpus Christi, Texas. The facility has operated since 2023 and produces eFuels using waste carbon and renewable energy.

The eSAF was blended with conventional jet fuel and tested against the ASTM specification for Jet A fuel. As a result, the fuel could enter existing aviation fuel systems without aircraft or infrastructure modifications.

The delivery also marks the first U.S. commercial airport delivery of SAF produced without biobased feedstocks.

According to Infinium, its eSAF can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90% compared with conventional petroleum-based jet fuel.

American Airlines prepares for larger-scale eSAF use

American Airlines has been working with partners to expand the use of sustainable aviation fuel. The airline has an offtake agreement for commercial volumes of eSAF from Infinium’s Project Roadrunner.

The project is currently under construction. Infinium expects production and deliveries to begin in 2027. At full capacity, Project Roadrunner could produce more than 5 million gallons of eSAF annually.

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said the flight demonstrates how next-generation fuel technologies can move from investment and development into commercial operations.

eSAF could help reduce aviation emissions

Aviation consumes almost 100 billion gallons of jet fuel each year. Meanwhile, sustainable aviation fuel still accounts for less than 1% of global jet fuel consumption.

Therefore, the industry needs scalable alternatives that can work with existing aircraft and fueling infrastructure. eSAF offers one potential route because producers can make it from waste CO₂ and renewable electricity.

The technology could also diversify aviation’s fuel supply and strengthen energy security. However, expanding production and reducing costs will remain critical to wider adoption.

The Corpus Christi–Dallas Fort Worth flight represents a step from eSAF development toward commercial deployment. It also highlights the potential for ultra-low-carbon aviation fuels to support the industry’s long-term emissions reduction goals.
