ITA Airways is accelerating its sustainability strategy by deploying an AI-powered optimization tool across its fleet. The airline aims to reduce fuel consumption and emissions while maintaining operational efficiency.

The initiative uses SITA OptiFlight, a solution that leverages real-time data and machine learning to improve flight performance.

AI Optimizes Climb Performance

SITA OptiFlight calculates the most efficient climb profile for each flight. It adjusts parameters such as airspeed, altitude transitions, and climb rates. The system uses predictive analytics and 4D weather data to generate precise recommendations.

In addition, the tool applies aircraft-specific modeling. This ensures optimized performance under varying operational and environmental conditions.

Measurable Fuel and Emission Savings

ITA Airways has already recorded significant improvements. The airline expects to save more than 7,100 tons of fuel and reduce over 22,100 tons of CO₂ emissions across 2025 and 2026.

These gains highlight how data-driven technologies can deliver both environmental and cost benefits.

Supporting Sustainable Aviation

The deployment reflects a broader shift toward digital transformation in aviation. Airlines are increasingly using AI to optimize operations and meet regulatory and environmental targets.

Francesco Presicce, Chief Innovation Officer at ITA Airways, said the initiative supports long-term growth and sustainability goals. He emphasized that AI enables measurable improvements without compromising safety or efficiency.

Yann Cabaret, CEO of SITA for Aircraft, noted that fuel efficiency remains a major challenge for airlines. He added that real-time data and predictive modeling play a key role in reducing emissions while maintaining performance.

Industry Context

Across the aviation sector, companies are adopting advanced technologies to reduce environmental impact. AI, data analytics, and automation now play a central role in improving efficiency and lowering emissions.

This shift aligns with broader trends in sustainable airport operations with Level 4 carbon accreditation, where infrastructure and airline operations work together to achieve net zero goals.
