Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) has achieved Level 4 status under the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. This milestone marks a major step in the airport’s transition toward sustainable operations and Net Zero emissions.
The achievement forms a key part of LBA’s “Together for Tomorrow” strategy. This roadmap outlines how the airport plans to reach Net Zero carbon emissions for its operations by 2030.
Advancing Carbon Management Standards
Level 4 accreditation represents a significant progression in carbon management. Unlike earlier levels, it requires airports to align with the Paris Agreement targets. It also requires collaboration with third-party partners, such as airlines and ground handlers, to reduce emissions.
The programme, managed by ACI EUROPE, provides a structured framework for airports. It evaluates how they measure, manage, and reduce CO₂ emissions across operations.
A Strategic Approach to Net Zero
LBA’s sustainability strategy focuses on four key pillars:
- Destination: Net Zero – The airport targets Net Zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. It plans to remove gas use and expand on-site renewable energy.
- Protecting Yorkshire – The airport promotes public transport use and operates hybrid bus services. It also diverts all waste from landfill and supports biodiversity projects.
- Connecting Communities – LBA aims to retain at least 35% of its annual spend within local areas and support community initiatives.
- Putting People First – The strategy promotes diversity, employee well-being, and volunteer engagement. It also includes a dedicated mental health programme.
