Madrid Introduces Autonomous Public Transport

Madrid has launched Spain’s first autonomous on-demand bus service at Mercamadrid, the country’s largest food distribution platform.

The initiative marks another step toward smarter and more sustainable urban mobility. It also demonstrates how autonomous transport can support mobility in complex urban and logistics environments.

The project operates under the MOBILITIES FOR EU initiative. It explores how connected, automated and zero-emission transport can improve urban mobility.

Electric Bus Provides Flexible Mobility

Alsa operates the new service using a fully electric autonomous bus.

Mercamadrid welcomes more than 20,000 people and 15,000 vehicles each day. Managing this level of traffic requires flexible transportation options.

The service therefore combines scheduled and on-demand operations.

During peak hours, the bus follows a fixed timetable. Later in the day, passengers can request trips through a mobile application.

This approach allows the service to adjust routes and trip frequency according to passenger demand.

Autonomous Technology Supports Smart Mobility

The pilot combines several advanced technologies.

The autonomous bus uses automated driving systems, advanced sensors and 5G connectivity. Together, these technologies allow the project team to examine how autonomous public transport can operate safely within a busy logistics hub.

The service also aims to demonstrate how zero-emission mobility can complement existing public transport.

Project Will Assess Scalability

The Madrid pilot goes beyond testing autonomous driving technology.

Project teams will evaluate passenger behaviour and operational performance during the trial. They will also assess whether the service can expand to other locations.

The results could provide useful insights for other European cities considering autonomous public transport.

In particular, the on-demand model could help cities serve areas where traditional fixed-route services may not efficiently match passenger demand.

Autonomous Mobility Expands in Madrid

The launch at Mercamadrid highlights Madrid’s efforts to develop smarter and more sustainable transportation systems.

By combining electric propulsion, autonomous driving, connectivity and demand-responsive services, the project offers a new approach to urban mobility.
