The Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television, and Sports of Hainan Province has joined the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) as a Destination Partner.

Hainan, China’s southernmost tropical island province, is developing its tourism sector while expanding international connectivity, consumption and economic cooperation.

Hainan Expands International Tourism Ambitions

The establishment of the Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP) in 2020 marked an important step in the province’s development. The initiative supports greater openness, investment, trade facilitation and international connectivity.

Tourism remains a central part of Hainan’s development strategy. Through the Hainan International Tourism and Consumption Centre, the province is developing its tourism offering across several areas.

These include:

  • International tourism
  • Tourism product development
  • Cruise and yacht tourism
  • Culture
  • Sports
  • Wellness tourism
  • Space tourism

Hainan has set a target of welcoming 154 million domestic and international visitors by 2030.

WTTC and Hainan Strengthen Their Partnership

The new partnership builds on an existing relationship between WTTC and Hainan. The province hosted the WTTC Global Summit in 2014, giving it experience in international tourism collaboration.

As a Destination Partner, Hainan aims to strengthen engagement with global Travel & Tourism leaders. The province also plans to develop its international destination brand and explore opportunities to host future WTTC events and industry discussions.

Focus on International Connectivity

Gloria Guevara, President & CEO of WTTC, welcomed Hainan to the organisation and highlighted the province’s tourism development plans and international connectivity.

Chen Tiejun, Director-General of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports of Hainan Province, said Hainan will use the partnership to strengthen its international tourism profile and cooperation with global industry partners.

He also highlighted the province’s tropical environment, resort offerings and developing tourism experiences in areas such as marine, wellness and space tourism.

Hainan Targets Growth in Global Tourism

The partnership provides Hainan with a platform to engage with tourism businesses, governments and destinations around the world.

As the province develops its Free Trade Port and expands international tourism opportunities, its Destination Partnership with WTTC will support greater industry cooperation and global engagement.
