TUI River Cruises has announced plans to further expand its fleet with two next-generation new-build ships scheduled to enter service in 2028. The announcement was made during the christening ceremony of TUI Aria in Frankfurt.

The move signals the company’s continued investment in the growing river cruise sector and its ambition to strengthen its presence across Europe’s major waterways.

Fleet Expansion Plans

With the addition of the two new vessels, TUI River Cruises will expand its fleet from six ships in 2026 to a total of ten ships by 2028. The vessels will operate across key river cruise destinations including the:

  • Rhine River
  • Nile River
  • Douro River

The expansion reflects growing demand for culturally immersive travel experiences along Europe’s major waterways.

Next-Generation Ship Design

The upcoming ships are being designed with future sustainability in mind. According to the company, the vessels will be built with foundations for alternative fuel technologies, particularly methanol, enabling them to adapt to more sustainable energy solutions as the technology develops.

Each ship will feature:

  • 94 cabins
  • Capacity for 188 guests
  • Modern interiors and spacious venues
  • Flexible travel experiences tailored for guests

The vessels are also being specifically designed for the UK travel market, offering flexibility and a range of onboard experiences aligned with customer preferences.

Strong Market Performance

TUI Group continues to expand its river cruise operations following strong customer satisfaction and rising occupancy rates. The company believes demand for slow travel and culturally rich experiences on rivers is continuing to grow among travelers.

Leadership Perspective

Katy Berzins said the new ships represent a major milestone for the brand and highlight the company’s commitment to delivering a modern river cruising experience.

She noted that the vessels are purpose-built for guests and reflect the brand’s ambition to combine flexibility, innovation, and immersive travel experiences along Europe’s waterways.

Christening of TUI Aria

The fleet expansion announcement coincided with the official christening of TUI Aria, which will join the company’s European fleet in Summer 2026.

The ceremony took place on the Rhine River in Frankfurt and included speeches from Katy Berzins and Mircea Tudose.

The celebration featured the traditional bottle-breaking ceremony, the official naming of the ship, and entertainment including performances by DJ Duka, the band B*Spoke, and saxophonist Dima.

The ship’s godparents were Paula Burgess, a TUI travel agent, and Mark Sage, Senior Commercial Manager at TUI River Cruises.

Future Outlook

The new ship orders mark a significant step in the long-term growth strategy of TUI River Cruises. By expanding its fleet and investing in next-generation technology, the company aims to strengthen its position in the fast-growing river cruise market while offering modern, sustainable travel experiences for future passengers.
