Shanghai, China — March 2026Shanghai has marked a strong start to its 2026 cruise season with the arrival of two luxury cruise ships at the city’s North Bund, highlighting growing momentum in inbound tourism and the impact of China’s expanded visa-free entry policies.

The Shanghai luxury cruise calls 2026 milestone underscores the city’s rising appeal as a key port of call in Asia’s luxury cruise segment.

Two Luxury Ships Arrive Within a Week

The week began with the arrival of the Seven Seas Explorer, operated by Regent Seven Seas Cruises, on March 6. The vessel docked at the Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal, located in the North Bund area.

According to port authorities, approximately 99% of passengers onboard utilized China’s 15-day visa-free transit policy, reflecting strong uptake of simplified entry procedures.

Just days later, on March 11, the Luminara made its maiden call to mainland China, also berthing at the same terminal. Initial estimates indicate that over 80% of its international passengers entered under the visa-waiver scheme.

Visa-Free Policy Driving Cruise Tourism

China’s expanded visa-free transit policy is playing a key role in attracting international cruise travelers.

The policy allows eligible foreign visitors to enter select Chinese cities, including Shanghai, for short stays without requiring a full visa, making it significantly easier for cruise passengers to explore destinations during port calls.

The high adoption rates seen during both ship arrivals highlight the effectiveness of the policy in:

  • Simplifying entry procedures
  • Encouraging short-term tourism
  • Enhancing the overall passenger experience

Strengthening Shanghai’s Cruise Hub Position

The consecutive arrivals of two luxury cruise ships effectively kick off Shanghai’s 2026 cruise season, positioning the city as a major gateway for international cruise itineraries in Asia.

The Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal continues to play a central role in accommodating high-end cruise traffic, offering modern infrastructure and strategic access to the city’s cultural and commercial attractions.

Outlook for 2026 Cruise Season

With increasing cruise activity and supportive tourism policies, Shanghai is expected to see continued growth in cruise arrivals throughout 2026.

The Shanghai luxury cruise calls 2026 trend reflects broader recovery in the global cruise industry, particularly in Asia, where destinations are actively working to attract international travelers.

As more cruise lines include Shanghai in their itineraries, the city is poised to strengthen its position as a leading cruise hub and tourism gateway in the region.
