Meliá Hotels International has announced a major expansion across Malta and Gozo, confirming plans to open nine new hotels over the next three years. The development follows the recent opening of Hotel Ben Marsalforn Affiliated by Meliá in November 2025 and further strengthens the group’s presence in one of Europe’s fast-growing luxury travel destinations.

The expansion is being developed in partnership with Agius Group through its hospitality arm, Blue Clay Collection. Together, the partners aim to enhance Malta’s tourism landscape by introducing a diverse portfolio of hotels that reflect the character, heritage, and identity of local communities across both islands.

Each property is designed to integrate with its surroundings, ranging from the restoration of a historic residence in Valletta to the transformation of antique townhouses in Victoria, Gozo’s main town. Gozo, known for its slower pace of life, scenic landscapes, and strong cultural traditions, plays a central role in the expansion strategy.

Diverse Brand Portfolio Across Key Locations

The new openings will span several of Meliá Hotels International’s brands, including The Meliá Collection, INNSiDE by Meliá, Affiliated by Meliá, and Meliá Hotels & Resorts.

  • The Meliá Collection will introduce boutique properties that highlight the cultural narrative of their locations, including hotels in Valletta, Malta’s UNESCO World Heritage capital. On Gozo, the brand will open two hotels in Victoria and another in the traditional village of San Lawrenz, reinforcing the island’s reputation for curated luxury and cultural depth.
  • Affiliated by Meliá will bring independent, character-rich hotels in Gozo villages such as Għarb, Qala, and Ghajnsielem into the Meliá network. These properties will offer intimate stays closely connected to village life, local festivals, hiking routes, and renowned diving sites.
  • INNSiDE by Meliá, designed for modern travellers who blend business and leisure, is set to debut in Buggiba in spring 2026. Located along the shores of St. Paul’s Bay in northern Malta, the hotel will feature contemporary design, social spaces, and a vibrant atmosphere.
  • A 300-room Meliá Hotels & Resorts property will open in St. Julian’s, one of Malta’s most active tourism hubs on the eastern coast. As the group’s flagship brand, the hotel will deliver full-service hospitality with a focus on premium guest experiences.

Strengthening Tourism and the MICE Sector

Several of the new hotels will include dedicated conference and events facilities, supporting Malta and Gozo’s growing appeal as destinations for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE). This aligns with broader efforts to diversify tourism demand beyond leisure travel and extend year-round visitation.

The Meliá Hotels International Malta and Gozo expansion represents a strategic investment in culturally rooted hospitality, combining international operating standards with strong local identity. Through carefully positioned brands and adaptive reuse of historic properties, the group is set to play a significant role in shaping the future of tourism across both islands.
