The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has launched the 7 Contemporary Wonders of the World campaign. The global initiative invites people to nominate modern landmarks that have transformed travel, tourism, local communities, and economic development since 1801.

For the first time, the public can help identify the destinations that best represent the modern era of travel.

Campaign Celebrates Modern Landmarks

The campaign aims to create a global benchmark for contemporary wonders. It recognizes landmarks for their architectural and cultural importance as well as their contribution to tourism and local economies.

Moreover, WTTC wants to highlight destinations that attract visitors, create jobs, encourage investment, and strengthen communities.

Famous Icons and Emerging Destinations Eligible

The initiative welcomes nominations for globally recognized attractions and emerging landmarks. Eligible sites must have made a meaningful impact on tourism and community development.

Examples include:

  • Eiffel Tower, Paris
  • Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao
  • Grand Egyptian Museum, Giza

However, the campaign also encourages nominations for lesser-known attractions that continue to shape the future of tourism.

Selection Based on Multiple Criteria

WTTC will evaluate nominations using several factors, including:

  • Tourism contribution
  • Economic impact
  • Community value
  • Destination development
  • Cultural significance
  • Architectural excellence

As a result, the final list will reflect destinations that deliver long-term benefits beyond visitor numbers.

Campaign Timeline

The year-long campaign follows four key stages:

  • 7 July 2026: Global nominations open.
  • 7 January 2027: WTTC announces 70 nominees and opens public voting.
  • 7 April 2027: The list narrows to 30 finalists.
  • 7 July 2027: WTTC reveals the 7 Contemporary Wonders of the World.

WTTC Highlights Tourism’s Economic Value

WTTC President and CEO Gloria Guevara said every generation creates landmarks that inspire future travelers. She added that the campaign recognizes destinations that generate jobs, attract investment, support local businesses, and strengthen communities.

Furthermore, she emphasized that strategic investment in tourism infrastructure delivers lasting economic and social benefits for future generations.

Supporting Future Tourism Growth

Through this initiative, WTTC hopes to encourage governments and private organizations to invest in world-class tourism assets. Additionally, the campaign aims to showcase how collaboration can create iconic destinations that drive sustainable growth and improve visitor experiences worldwide.
