Carnival Cruise Line has announced the launch of a new loyalty program, Carnival Rewards™, set to debut in June 2026. The initiative introduces a points-based system designed to deliver more personalized benefits and flexible ways for guests to earn rewards and status.

The new program replaces the existing Very Important Fun Person (VIFP)™ program and marks a significant shift in how the cruise line recognizes and rewards customer loyalty.

A New Dual-Earning Loyalty Model

Carnival Rewards introduces a dual-earning structure. Guests will earn:

  • Reward points, which they can redeem on Carnival purchases
  • Status qualifying stars, which determine tier levels

This model moves beyond the traditional approach that focused mainly on the number of cruise nights. Instead, it emphasizes total spend, including cruise fares and onboard activities.

Expanding Earning Opportunities

The new system allows guests to earn rewards through a wider range of activities. Spending onboard, purchasing add-ons, and using affiliated services will all contribute to points accumulation.

A key feature of the program is its integration with the Carnival Rewards Mastercard, developed in partnership with Barclays. Cardholders will earn points and status credits through everyday spending, accelerating their progress toward higher tiers.

Carnival stated that it will release additional details about the credit card benefits in the coming months.

Focus on Personalization and Flexibility

The cruise line designed Carnival Rewards to deliver more tailored perks. The program will introduce new reward categories and enhanced benefits aligned with individual guest preferences and spending patterns.

Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line, said the new program reflects the company’s focus on delivering more meaningful recognition to loyal customers. She noted that rapid growth in top-tier membership levels has made it harder to maintain a differentiated experience under the current system.

Transition Timeline

Carnival will implement the new program in June 2026. Until then, guests will continue to earn status under the VIFP program. Existing members will transition into Carnival Rewards, using their current status as an entry point into the new structure.

Industry Impact

The introduction of a spend-based, points-driven loyalty system represents a notable shift in the cruise sector. By combining cruise spending with everyday purchases, Carnival aligns its program more closely with airline and hotel loyalty models.

This move signals a broader trend toward integrated, flexible loyalty ecosystems that reward customer engagement across multiple touchpoints rather than a single travel metric.

Looking Ahead

With Carnival Rewards, the company aims to strengthen customer retention and increase engagement through a more dynamic and accessible rewards structure. As the cruise industry evolves, loyalty programs like this are expected to play a central role in shaping customer experience and brand differentiation.

The program also reflects a broader industry trend where cruise lines integrate everyday spending into loyalty ecosystems, similar to cruise credit card reward programs that allow travelers to earn points beyond travel purchases.
