Bahamas — MSC Group has announced plans to expand its private destination portfolio with a new island and an exclusive beach club, reinforcing its long-term cruise destination strategy.
Second Private Island to Open by 2028
The new island, Sandy Cay, will be developed adjacent to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the company’s existing private destination.
According to MSC, Sandy Cay is being designed as a more intimate and secluded extension, offering guests a quieter and more exclusive experience compared to its larger neighboring island.
New Beach Club Planned in Grand Bahama
In addition, MSC’s infrastructure division, CTL Maritime, will develop the MSC Beach Club at the Grand Lucayan complex.
The 20-acre project will be:
- Purpose-built exclusively for passengers of MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys
- Designed to deliver a premium beach destination experience
- Located in Freeport on Grand Bahama Island
Construction is scheduled to begin on April 12, 2026, subject to environmental and regulatory approvals.
Part of a Broader Destination Strategy
Notably, the beach club and Sandy Cay projects form part of MSC’s wider investment in private destinations and port infrastructure.
This strategy includes:
- Expansion of Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, expected by late 2027
- Development of Freeport Harbour cruise port, which will be open to multiple cruise lines
Industry Context and Strategy
Overall, MSC is aligning with a broader cruise industry trend toward controlled, private destinations, which allow operators to:
- Enhance guest experience consistency
- Increase onshore revenue opportunities
- Differentiate their brand offerings
By adding Sandy Cay and the MSC Beach Club, the company is strengthening its position in the premium and experiential cruise segment.
Outlook
Looking ahead, the 2028 opening of Sandy Cay and the phased development in Grand Bahama indicate continued capital investment in destination infrastructure, a key competitive lever in the cruise sector.
