Airports worldwide are rapidly adopting AI in airport operations as global passenger traffic continues to climb. With air travel forecast to reach 10.2 billion passengers in 2026, a 3.9% year-on-year increase, airport operators are turning to artificial intelligence to improve efficiency, reduce congestion, and enhance the passenger experience.

Drawing on data from Airports Council International (ACI), industry experts say AI is becoming a core tool for managing growing demand without compromising safety or service quality.

From Reactive to Predictive Airport Operations

AI is now embedded across airport workflows, reshaping everything from passenger flow management to baggage tracking, cybersecurity, and predictive maintenance. At the Airport AI Exchange event held this month, analysts highlighted how data-driven systems are helping airports move away from reactive crowd control toward predictive operations.

AI-powered analytics can anticipate congestion at security checkpoints, immigration counters, and boarding gates, allowing airports to deploy staff and resources before bottlenecks occur—reducing delays and improving on-time performance.

Smarter Baggage, Faster Borders

Baggage handling is another area seeing rapid transformation. AI-driven optimisation tools are improving tracking accuracy and reducing lost luggage incidents. At the same time, biometric processing is gaining traction, with some airports testing systems that allow passengers to pass through immigration without presenting a physical passport.

Automated check-in and boarding, supported by AI and facial recognition, are also helping airports process passengers faster while maintaining security standards.

Personalised Passenger Experiences

Beyond operations, AI is playing a growing role in customer experience. According to industry experts, AI-powered analytics can personalise services by anticipating passenger needs—from real-time wayfinding assistance to tailored retail and dining recommendations.

“AI has progressed very rapidly, especially in the last few years,” said Amad Malik, Chief AI Officer at Airport AI Exchange. “The capabilities we’re seeing today are far beyond what was possible even a short time ago.”

Mahmood AlSeddiqi, former Vice President of IT at Bahrain Airport Company, noted that AI enables airports to deliver smoother, more personalised journeys from check-in to boarding.

Adoption Still in Early Stages

Despite rapid technological advances, experts caution that aviation’s overall adoption of AI remains limited compared to other industries. Legacy systems, regulatory requirements, and the sector’s cautious approach to risk have slowed deployment.

“AI has advanced exponentially, but aviation’s use of it is still relatively small,” Malik said. “There’s significant untapped potential as airports modernise their infrastructure.”

Preparing for the Next Wave of Air Travel

As passenger volumes continue to rise, AI is increasingly viewed as essential to scaling airport capacity sustainably. From predictive maintenance on airside equipment to real-time passenger flow optimisation, AI is set to become a cornerstone of future-ready airports.
