Member States Invited to Submit Candidates by 9 June 2026
Madrid | March 2026-UN Tourism has officially opened the call for applications for the Best Tourism Villages 2026 initiative, inviting Member States to nominate up to eight candidate villages through their respective National Tourism Administrations.
Since its launch in 2021, the programme has attracted more than 1,000 applications from 100 countries. The growing network now brings together 319 rural destinations worldwide, including more than 230 villages formally recognized and 83 participating in the Upgrade Programme, spanning 65 countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Middle East.
Applications for the 2026 edition will close on 9 June 2026, with selected villages to be announced in the third quarter of the year at a UN Tourism event.
Tourism as a Rural Development Catalyst
UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Al Nuwais described tourism as a “proven game changer” for rural communities.
She noted that the Best Tourism Villages initiative showcases destinations where tourism sustains traditions, supports small businesses and protects natural ecosystems, while providing authentic visitor experiences.
The programme operates under the broader Tourism for Rural Development framework, aligning tourism growth with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Evaluation and Selection Criteria
Applications will be assessed by an independent Advisory Board of global experts. Villages are evaluated across nine thematic areas covering:
- Environmental sustainability
- Social inclusion and community wellbeing
- Economic development
- Cultural and natural heritage preservation
- Governance and infrastructure
The comprehensive assessment framework is designed to ensure tourism contributes to long-term resilience and prosperity.
Three Core Pillars of the Initiative
1. Recognition as Best Tourism Village
Villages demonstrating excellence in heritage preservation, sustainability and community-based development receive official recognition.
2. Upgrade Programme
Destinations that fall short of full recognition criteria are enrolled in a structured improvement pathway, receiving tailored technical guidance to strengthen their tourism strategies.
3. Best Tourism Villages Network
The Network connects recognized villages and Upgrade Programme participants, fostering peer learning, partnerships and cross-regional collaboration.
Expanding a Global Rural Tourism Network
By expanding participation in 2026, UN Tourism aims to strengthen rural economies, preserve cultural landscapes and encourage responsible travel practices.
The initiative reinforces tourism’s role not only as an economic sector but as a strategic instrument for inclusive development, environmental stewardship and community resilience.
