Tallinn, Estonia – February 2026 – Tallink Grupp has reaffirmed its long-standing environmental commitment by continuing its partnership with the John Nurminen Foundation to protect and preserve the Baltic Sea.

As part of the latest initiative, Tallink Grupp is donating €20,000 to the foundation. The funds were raised through the sale of Tallink Silja Line branded chocolate bars, with 20 cents donated for every bar sold, enabling passengers to contribute directly to marine conservation efforts.

Long-Term Commitment to the Baltic Sea

The Tallink Grupp Baltic Sea cooperation reflects more than two decades of partnership between the two organizations. Since 2003, multiple joint projects have been implemented to reduce environmental pressure on the Baltic Sea and support ecosystem restoration.

“Tallink Grupp connects the shores and people of the Baltic Sea, and for us this also means a natural obligation to maintain and improve the condition of our home sea,” said Paavo Nõgene, CEO of Tallink Grupp.

Beyond charitable contributions, the company is investing in fleet modernization and environmental performance improvements, including:

  • Increased energy efficiency across vessels
  • Use of renewable fuels
  • Transition to liquefied biomethane (LBG) on shuttle vessels
  • Ongoing reduction of operational carbon footprint

According to Nõgene, the full transition to renewable fuel use for shuttle vessels is expected to be completed this year.

Science-Based Marine Protection

The John Nurminen Foundation focuses on reducing human-induced stress on the Baltic Sea through targeted, measurable environmental projects. Its primary objectives include:

  • Reducing eutrophication
  • Preventing harmful chemical discharges
  • Restoring marine biodiversity

Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt, CEO of the foundation, emphasized the importance of long-term corporate partnerships:

“We finance our Baltic Sea work with donations, and I would like to thank Tallink Grupp for its long-term cooperation and support. With donations, we have been able to significantly reduce harmful chemical emissions into the Baltic Sea in Finland and restore key species along the southern coast of Sweden.”

The foundation also organizes Baltic Sea Day, an annual initiative aimed at strengthening public awareness and engagement across the region, including Estonia.

Passengers Play a Role

A distinctive aspect of the Tallink Grupp Baltic Sea cooperation is its consumer-linked model. By purchasing Tallink Silja Line branded chocolate bars onboard, passengers directly support environmental restoration efforts.

This approach combines corporate responsibility with public participation, reinforcing awareness while generating tangible environmental funding.

Regional Responsibility

Operating extensively across the Baltic Sea region, Tallink Grupp views environmental stewardship as integral to its business strategy. The company’s dual approach — operational decarbonization and environmental partnerships — reflects broader maritime industry efforts to balance connectivity with sustainability.

With more than 20 years of collaboration, the continued partnership with the John Nurminen Foundation underscores a shared commitment to safeguarding one of Europe’s most environmentally sensitive marine ecosystems.
