Innovative Partners Successfully Contribute to Verified Net Zero Hotels

Sustainable practices have long been embedded across the global hotel portfolio, and in 2025 this commitment advanced further with the launch of the world’s first Verified Net Zero Hotels in Oslo and Manchester. These pioneering properties demonstrate how collaboration with innovative partners can significantly reduce operational emissions while maintaining high-quality guest experiences.

The Role of Innovative Partners in Reducing Operational Emissions

Verified Net Zero Hotels go beyond full electrification and the use of 100% renewable energy. They also deliver low-carbon menus and operate as minimal waste hotels, targeting the maximum possible reduction of operational emissions, commonly referred to as Scope 3 emissions.

To achieve this, strategic partnerships have been established with Klimato, Too Good To Go, Clean the World, and eSmiley. Together, these partners support the quantification, targeting, and reduction of emissions linked to food and beverage operations, amenity recycling, and food waste minimization.

Klimato: Driving Low-Carbon Food and Beverage Choices

Around 50% of Scope 3 emissions originate from food and beverage operations. To address this, Verified Net Zero Hotels partnered with Klimato to introduce low-carbon menus. Klimato’s methodology is science-based, validated by the World Resources Institute, and supported by a comprehensive database covering more than 4,000 ingredients and 20,000 variations across 100 countries.

All menu and buffet items are clearly labelled from A to E, indicating their carbon footprint and enabling guests to make informed, climate-conscious choices without compromising on flavor or quality. The impact is measurable:

  • In Manchester, 95% of all food offerings are designed with climate considerations in mind.
  • In Oslo, 80% of meeting and events menus are rated low in carbon emissions.

Too Good To Go: Minimizing Food Waste

Food waste is a major contributor to Scope 3 emissions. Through its partnership with Too Good To Go, Verified Net Zero Hotels ensure that surplus food is consumed rather than discarded. Using the Too Good To Go app, guests and local users can purchase surplus breakfast or buffet items at a reduced price.

This approach helps reduce emissions associated with food production, transportation, and disposal, while ensuring that high-quality, low-carbon food is valued to the last bite. Everyday guest choices are transformed into tangible climate action that directly supports the Verified Net Zero Hotels initiative.

Clean the World: Closed-Loop Recycling of Amenities

Reducing waste also requires innovative recycling solutions. Verified Net Zero Hotels work with Clean the World to ensure the closed-loop recycling of bulk bathroom amenity dispensers. Once shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and lotion dispensers are emptied, both the bottles and pumps are sent for 100% recycling.

The recycled materials are transformed into pellets that can be reused to create items such as blankets, toys, new consumer products, DIY crafts, jewelry, and even pieces of art, significantly reducing waste-related Scope 3 emissions.

eSmiley: Data-Driven Food Waste Reduction

To further reduce food waste, Verified Net Zero Hotels partnered with eSmiley, a food waste monitoring system installed in hotel kitchens. The tool measures waste across storage, production, buffet, and plate waste, creating a clear baseline for improvement.

This data-driven approach encourages collaboration among chefs and kitchen teams to reduce overproduction and storage waste. Buffet and plate waste are addressed through guest engagement, using simple but effective messages such as “Take all you can eat, but eat all you can take” and “Less waste is good taste.”

Delivering Low-Carbon, Minimal-Waste Operations

Pioneering initiatives like Verified Net Zero Hotels require strong collaboration and innovative solutions. Through active partnerships with Klimato, Too Good To Go, Clean the World, and eSmiley, these hotels successfully reduce Scope 3 operational emissions while delivering low-carbon menus and minimal-waste operations.

Together, these efforts position Verified Net Zero Hotels as a practical and scalable model for the future of sustainable hospitality.
